Peñalara Hike and Lagoon from Cotos: A Practical Guide
If you are searching for a Peñalara hike, start at Cotos: this pass in the Sierra de Guadarrama is the starting point for the paths to the Peñalara lagoon and to the highest summit in the range, a short drive from Collado Villalba. This guide explains what to expect, when to go, what to bring and how to plan the day so the outing goes smoothly.
Peñalara hike: lagoon or summit?
Peñalara is the highest peak in the Sierra de Guadarrama, above 2,400 metres, and the whole area belongs to the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park. At its foot lies the Peñalara lagoon, glacial in origin and surrounded by rock, pine forest and mountain meadows. It is one of the most recognisable high-mountain landscapes in the Community of Madrid and also one of the closest for anyone staying around Collado Villalba.
When people talk about "the Peñalara hike", they are really talking about two different outings. The first goes to the lagoon: a mountain route that, with proper footwear and good weather, is within reach of anyone used to walking. The second is the climb to the summit, which is considerably more demanding, with more ascent, stony ground and plenty of exposure to cold and strong gusts. Choose according to your fitness and, above all, the weather on the day.
How do you get to Cotos from Collado Villalba?
The usual paths to the lagoon and the summit start at the Cotos pass, in the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama. From Collado Villalba you drive up mountain roads with bends and a steady climb, so leave yourself some extra time and drive carefully, especially if there is ice or fog. If you already know the atmosphere of Navacerrada and its mountain day out, much of the road will seem well known.
On fine weekends the mountains are busy, and the access roads and car parks around the national park can fill up. We cannot promise spaces or open access on any given day, so check the national park's official website beforehand and, if you can, pick a weekday or set off early.
When is the best time to hike Peñalara?
In late autumn, like now, the days are short and at this altitude it can be cold, frosty or even snowy. That does not rule out the outing, but it means planning more carefully: check the mountain forecast, pack warm clothing and work out your return so you are down in daylight. For more on the colours of the pine forest at this time of year, see our article on autumn in the Sierra de Guadarrama.
In summer the weather tends to be steadier, but the sun at altitude is strong and storms can build in the afternoon. In the cold months, with snow and ice, the summit calls for equipment and mountain experience; if you do not have it, it is wiser to stay on the lower ground or leave the climb for another day.
What should you bring to the Peñalara lagoon?
- Mountain footwear with a good sole: the ground is rocky and can be wet or icy.
- Layers of clothing, a windproof jacket and a waterproof; the weather changes quickly at altitude.
- A hat and gloves in autumn and the cold months; sunglasses and sun protection the rest of the year.
- Water and some food for the whole outing: do not count on services along the way.
- A map or downloaded route on your phone and a power bank, because signal can drop out.
- A small rucksack with a bag so you can carry your rubbish back down.
Safety tips and respecting the park
Peñalara lies within a protected area, and that comes with rules: stick to the marked paths, respect the signs and any restricted zones, leave no rubbish and take nothing from the mountain. The specific regulations (for example, which activities are allowed in each zone) can change, so read them on the park's official website before you set off.
If you are only going to the lagoon
This is the sensible choice for a first visit. Walk at your own pace, stop to take in the scenery and stay on the marked paths. If the sky closes in or fog appears, turn back rather than waiting to see how it develops.
If you are considering the summit
Only attempt it with experience and good fitness, and preferably with company. In snow or ice you may need specific equipment. Tell someone your route and roughly when you expect to be back, and do not hesitate to give up the summit if conditions are poor: the mountain will still be there next time.
How should you plan the day?
- Check the mountain forecast the day before and again in the morning.
- Leave Collado Villalba with time to spare, especially at weekends, and reach Cotos without rushing.
- Decide at the start whether you are doing the lagoon or the summit, and do not change plan on the way without a good reason.
- Walk at a pace where you can still hold a conversation; if you are out of breath, slow down.
- Start the return early: in autumn it gets dark soon, and it is wiser to keep a good margin of daylight.
